[Video clicks on, annnnnd... blue eyes, green suit (because Shenu burned his dress at last), this is definitely Valmont talking. He's sat at a desk in his office, his expression somewhat thoughtful. When he speaks however, his tone is businesslike.]
It has recently been pointed out to me that I'm coming up on the end of my seventh month here, and while I'm sure this is something of a popular sentiment here, I am tired. Tired of trying to redeem myself in a place where it is incredibly obvious that outside of my own warden, there isn't a single soul in this place with any concern for my well being.
This isn't a bid for sympathy, it's not even really a complaint, it's just something that has become impossible to ignore. The wardens are loyal to one another and to their own inmates, but the majority of us can not rely upon their support, their protection, or their ability to punish the crimes committed against us in any meaningful way.
[He gestures idly with one hand, it's almost a shrug. As if to say that he knows he isn't revealing anything new or shocking to anyone here, that this is all completely obvious to the Barge en masse.]
When someone here is murdered, the punishment is almost without exception, seven days in level zero, and a loss of privileges. Probably a thorough tongue lashing on top of that, but as we have seen over and over again, it hardly acts as a deterrent. How many inmates publicly confess to their crimes? Or volunteer to take the walk down to level zero themselves? The repercussions for our actions here are utterly insignificant, and until we can find an alternative to this? Until we can find some way of making the penalty for murder or assault significant? Life will remain cheap here. Suffering will remain cheap.
[Now he raises a hand, his expression becoming more direct. This isn't an emotional plea for support or human decency, it's an open proposition.]
All of that being said, I believe there is an alternative. If we cannot depend upon the wardens? Then we must create a situation in which we can depend on one another. A social contract within which malicious acts of violence have consequences, and in which we can take actions to protect ourselves and those around us.
[He drops his hand down again, and frowns, his expression mildly exasperated now.]
Honestly... I can't possibly be the only one here who is sick of being so utterly powerless?
[ooc: This is Valmont's very cautious way of testing the waters to see if anyone would like to start a gang. He's not actually THAT bothered by the fact that murder has no consequences here, but he is really really starting to get sick of not having any henchmen to beat up people who piss him off.]

[SUCH A PICKY FILTER]
Date: 2011-08-08 04:06 am (UTC)The fact that people here are so unwilling to cooperate with one another should actually make it easier in fact, since all it would take would be three or four people to organize and agree to back one another up, for anyone who targeted or attacked one of those people to be outnumbered by the others when held to account for his behavior.

Date: 2011-08-08 04:24 am (UTC)It seems to me that it's our own inaction that put us in this position, as much as anything else. We've been lulled into believing that the token punishments administered here are enough.

[Or just having a group of people beat them savagely in a hallway, whatever.]

Date: 2011-08-08 05:00 pm (UTC)Comrade, it's the truth. Any supposed 'value' given to life is given by humans deluding themselves that their tiny little ownlives have meaning. Any true power is non-existent to individuals. We can grasp and grasp, but it is never real.
And any effort to do something? Is futile. It's banging your head against a brick wall, and that comrade, is ultimately powerless.
